Yagami Light a teenage boy from Kantou Japan aged 17, he stumbles upon a mysterious notebook. On the cover of the notebook is the English words, Death Note. He is by nature a curious, extremely intelligent person, to onlookers he appears normal but inside he is a justice driven young man.
He is sceptical about the actually power of the notebook, though being curious he tests it later that night in his room watching the news. Within the next 40 seconds the person whose name he wrote into the notebook dies. Light shocked by this, believes it is a mere coincidence. But his curiosity gets the better of him and he tests it again. It appears to him that it is real and after 5 days, he has killed so many criminals, the original owner of the Death Note a shinigami named Ryuk appears.
A shinigami is a God of death; bored with his current life he becomes amused with the outlook Light has and finds how he uses it "fun". Light now plans to remove the entire criminal population and evil doers from this rotten world and will reign over a new peaceful world as a God.
But a mysterious person named L, is brought onto the case, and he alone announces to Kira (name given to the person from the public for killing criminals) that he will stop him. Now the race begins, which side will find the other first, not knowing the identity of each other, which will prevail as "Justice".
