After losing her mother in a traffic accident, Tohru found herself living in a tent in the woods. But those very woods were property of the Sohma family, and little did Tohru realize that meeting them would have such a strong and personal impact on her life. While attending high school and working a part-time job at a hotel, Tohru acts as a housekeeper for Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo Sohma in exchange for them letting her live in their house. But besides doing the cooking and cleaning Tohru serves another, more meaningful purpose to the Sohmas. Her kindness, compassion, and sincere empathy help ease the tension that Yuki, Kyo, and the other Sohmas feel as a result of the curse that haunts their lives. Tohru's bright and positive outlook on life, her sympathetic heart, and her unfaltering habit of always putting the needs of others before her own, helps each of the troubled Sohmas cope with the conflicts in their lives and find much needed confindence within themselves.
Yuki is the most popular boy at Kawaia High School...so popular in fact, that he has his own fan club made up of most of the girls in the school. He's known as being nothing but kind, polite, and academically excelling, earning him the nickname "The Prince." But no one at the school, not even the fan club girls, know of Yuki's curse nor the more negative feelings and personal conflicts that he harbors deep inside him. One of his most tragic memories is when he was a young child playing a game with his friends, and one of the girls accidentally hugged him and he turned into a rat right before his friends' eyes! After that, Akito had all of the childrens' memories erased, and he even punished Yuki whenever he tried to disobey him. The utter lonliness and insecurity that Yuki grew up with made it extremely difficult for him to connect with other people and to deal with his own emotions. But meeting Tohru immediately began to lift the air of gloom that hung around Yuki's heart for so long. Spending time with her gradually warmed his soul and made him aware of the good qualities he possessed. And although the mutual hatred he shares with Kyo will never completely fade, it's obvious that Tohru's presence has greatly lessened it.
Although a member of the Sohma family, Kyo's zodiac animal - the cat, isn't considered a true member of the zodiac. Therefore, Kyo felt shunned and belittled by the rest of zodiac members, which is probably what caused him to develop his extremely brash and short-tempered personality. After four months of martial arts training in the mountains with his master Kazuma, Kyo returned to Shigure's house with his heart set on finally beating his bitter rival Yuki and claiming his place as a true member of the family. But apparently his hot-headedness and rash actions are no match for Yuki's calm and focused demeaner, and Kyo often receives the short end of the stick in their many fights. Although he acts tough, Kyo has great difficulty controlling his violent temperament and he has no idea how to deal with his emotions other than rage. He acted hostile towards Tohru when he first met her, but gradually her gentlessness and compassion cool off his surpressed anger and he even begins to show signs that he cares about her, although he tries his best to hide it.
Shigure is a writer who acts as a guardian for Yuki and Kyo. Although he's a bit mischievous and prone to kidding around a lot, he's very keen to the feelings of the other Sohmas and will always try to help out in his own way. When he's not stressing out his publisher, or acting like "a dirty old man" much to Yuki and Kyo's chagrin, Shigure is actually a pretty wise and decent guy.

Always bright, happy, and full of energy, one would never guess from Momiji's cheerful and fun-loving personality that he bears a very tragic past. On the day of his birth, when his mother tried to hold him right after he was just born, the curse that he had inherited became apparant and he turned into a rabbit right before her eyes! Afterwards, his mother suffered an extreme mental collapse as a result, and she totally refused to accept Momiji at all, appalled that such a "thing" had come out of her body. His father eventually told Momiji that his mother's condition would continue to get worse, and that the kindest thing they could do for her was to erase her memories of him. After her memories were erased by Hatori, Momiji's mother did indeed recover, and she even had another child(one not cursed with the zodiac.) However, she does not remember that Momiji is her son. Even in spite of this tragedy in his life, as well as the pain of having a mother who doesn't know who he is, Momiji continues to look on the bright side of life, and he even tells Tohru that all his memories are precious to him and that he always wants to carry them with him.
